Posing cheat codes for better photos

Facial expression

With your face you give the photo its own personality and the facial expression significantly conveys the mood that the photo should have in the end. Therefore, think in advance about what emotions you want to evoke with the picture. Here are a few tips for visually enhancing photos of your face:

  • Vary your line of sight and turn your head with your gaze from time to time.
  • Focus: A piercing look into the lens can completely change the effect of the image. Try it.
  • Tilt your head forward, backward, and sideways to add variety and make the images not look so static.
  • Look at the light sources to highlight the details of your face.
  • Stick your chin forward and tilt your head down ever so slightly, this will emphasize your jaw line!
  • Fix the tongue: Press the center of your tongue under the roof of your mouth and clench your molars. This will counteract the unpopular double chin and emphasize the cheek muscles.
  • Relax your lips so that the mouth is slightly open. This usually looks better than a strained smile.
  • Avoid fake smile, it often looks inauthentic. You want to always capture real emotion!
  • You can really overdo it with fake laughter, which then becomes real laughter and is truly authentic.

„People tend to think the grass is greener on the other side but you should only focus on yourself and work with what your mama gave you. Everyone can be photogenic.

Body language

Non-verbal communication through body language and posture towards others is something most people are aware of. However, many forget it in front of the lens. With photos, you also create a medium through which you communicate the moment, and permanently capture it! Here are a few tips to keep your pictures from looking like you took a picture of a bag of fresh potatoes at the market:

  • A straight back can be delightful. Stretch your back and pull your shoulders back. It looks more confident!
  • Vary the poses with your arms and legs, creating angles (depending on whether you’re standing or sitting, some poses will look better and some less so).
  • Standing or sitting at a 45° angle to the camera suits everyone! Try it.
  • While standing, shift your weight to one leg and push your hips out to the side to create fake curves.
  • Put one leg in front of your body or take one arm forward to add more variation.

Get to know your body type and own it!

To round it up, here are three extra tips:

  • Make fine adjustments after every photo you take, for example by combining (head) movements and different facial expressions and poses. This will make the results more dynamic and you might even discover a whole new side of yourself!
  • Mood: Everyone has bad days. If you don’t feel in the “right” mood on the day of the shoot, try to remember a situation in your life when you felt happier and more confident than ever before. What was the trigger for your positive feeling? Now put yourself back into this emotional situation and take on the role in which you found yourself at that moment.
  • Music: Play your favorite songs to take away all the pressure you may feel! It’s also a great addition to the previous tip!

Testimonials

I got an appointment at very short notice and received great, professional photos for my website. There is a short conversation beforehand, in which the personal wishes and ideas are addressed. In addition, it is clarified how the implementation proceeds. I felt in good hands - especially under these circumstances, because even corona measures were taken into account and implemented well. Overall very competent, professional and sympathetic! Highly recommend!
